Costumes are always fun to photograph and before the month of October is finished, we'll most likely have a few more images to show on the blog.

The Roman centurion was hand made. The armor was made from plaster bandages and paper mache' and actually molded to exactly fit his body. This armor is truly a custom fitted armor. The raised decoration on the armor was made using a cool melt glue gun, then spray painted to mimic a raised metal decoration.

The Roman helmet was really tricky, especially the "brush" decoration. Temporary red hair dye was used for the red color on the brush decoration. A real horsehair brush was used. The brush was found at a local hardware store (Home Depot) and it looked like it was made to be used to brush crumbs from a tablecloth. Tiny rubber bands were fastened at the base of each "bunch" of horsehair embedded into the wooden base of the brush, then that "bunch" was cut from the wooden brush base. After each "bunch" of horsehair was rubberbanded and cut from the brush base, the rubberbanded bunches were glued to a one and a half inch wide strip of flexible craft foam. The horsehair was dyed with temporary red hair dye because it resisted the fabric dye we first tried, (the fabric dye beaded up and didn't penetrate the hair), and we didn't use paint because we wanted to keep the horsehair separated instead of clumped together with paint. The hair dye was fire engine red, and it came in a spray bottle from a beauty supply store. Finally, the strip of craft foam was glued to the top of the helmet. The base of the helmet was constructed from an old felt hat and plaster bandages, topped with paper mache'.

The leather for the armor straps and "skirt" were salvaged from a thrift store leather coat.

Wonder Woman also made her own costume, stitch by stitch. Lindsay even knew the theme song from the Wonder Woman tv show by heart and would break out a verse now and then. The song is so cheesy, it's great. My favorite part of the song is the verse that says, "In her satin tights...........fighting for your rights". Too funny, Lindsay was a hoot.
Linda Carter, the star of tv's wonder woman had several different versions of the wonder woman outfit, and this is a copy of one of them. A local artist hand drew the golden decoration onto a piece of fabric with sewn in darts especially fitted to Lindsay and then it was cut out and applied to the red corset. This method was used after much trial and error. Check out wonder woman's golden lasso! Notice she's got the white stripe on her boots too.

Alice in Wonderland bought her costume at a local costume store. It's amazing the great outfits that can be purchased, I remember twenty years ago, teens and adults HAD to make their own outfit because there wasn't much of anything pre-made available to purchase. Melanie was extra cute in this outfit and arguably the least stressed of the whole group because she purchased her costume.

Woody, from Toy Story put his outfit together from some thrift store and children's toy store finds but he actually made the vest himself. David, (Woody) even figured out how to put a pull string that actually retracts after it's pulled, into the back of the vest. The vest is made of faux fur and we just traced around a vest from a genie costume onto newspaper for a pattern. Woodie's vest didn't need to be hemmed because of the fabric (faux fur) choice. So there was very little sewing involved, two shoulder seams and two side seams. He remembered to write Andy on the bottom of his shoe. The hat is a brown felt cowboy hat found many years ago at a salvation army type thrift store. We used a belt hole punch to make holes for the chin strap and decided against the leather whip stitching around the entire brim ala the real Woodie. David is also the artist that drew the designs on the roman armor and drew the golden design attached to Wonder Woman's bodice.

This group of costume designers joked that a tv show could be made from their costume making adventure. Only, instead of "Project Runway", this tv show would be titled "Budget Project Runway".
In the Budget version of the show, there is only one set of "good" scissors, one sewing machine, one iron, one fabric cutting table, etc. The designers have to keep asking if they can use the scissors, the sewing machine, the iron............. It's a funny idea and lets you know what it must have been like while they were all making their costumes.
