(in many cases) WRONG
Look at the image above. When you look at the image, the viewers eye automatically goes to the lightest thing in the picture or the area of greatest contrast. Her shirt sticks out as the area of greatest contrast so......you see her shirt, right?
Now, look at this image. What do you see? Your eye goes to her face, right?
Thats exactly what I want the viewer to see when they look at an image I've created, I want the focus to be the subject. I want you to see their face, not their clothes.
A white shirt WILL work against a white or super light background (like at the beach). And a black shirt won't work against a white or super light background. The goal is to keep the tonal values of the clothes and the background the same. I've found that earthtones work best for location portraits.
Simple, once you see it in front of you, isn't it?
